Why Read?
Reading is a key aspect of early childhood education and it is vital to leading a fulfilled life. This quote summarizes the impact of reading quite well. (Thank you Dr. Seuss.)
"The more you read,
the more things you will know.
The more that you learn,
the more places you will go."
Dr. Seuss
During the month of March, we'd like to put a spotlight on reading and inspire our youth to have fun with it.
Introducing Hawkwood School's First Read-A-Thon
From March 7th-15th, Hawkwood School Council and the Friends of Hawkwood School Society are challenging and encouraging all students to read -- or be engaged with a book (e.g. be read to, use Raz-Kids etc.) -- daily for nine days in a row.
This "Spring Into Reading" read-a-thon is a fundraiser for Hawkwood School. Students are asked to track their time spent with a book and secure pledges for their reading accomplishments (e.g. number of minutes read over the course of the read-a-thon.) There will be prizes!
We hope all families get into the spirit of this challenge and as parents, perhaps we can track our minutes too for fun and as a way to inspire our children.
All students have been sent home with an information package which includes a tracking sheet and pledge form. If you did not get one for your child, you can click here for the "spring into reading" read-a-thon package.
(Please note that donations made by cheque must be made out to Friends of Hawkwood School Society.)
A Happy Ending
Mark your calendars for Friday, March 13th - this is "Dress Up as Your Favourite Book Character Day".
All good things much come to an end and we want to make sure the students have a chance to celebrate their accomplishments and love for books in style. (Keep in mind that the school asks for no weapons or masks.)
Please read over the "spring into reading" read-a-thon package (link above) for more details and other fun challenges, prizes and activities occurring during the read-a-thon.
